Okay worked it out.  If you have a Shift and use Windows Update make sure you DONT install ''Update for Windows Vista (KB 943899) as it will knock out the SD drive. This will make u laugh, the title of the kb 943899: An update that improves the performance, responsiveness, and reliability of Windows Vista is available

DO NOT RUN WINDOWS UPDATE!! .. It has knocked out my sd card reader  .. time to find the damm patch an remove it
